The Adelaide Grand Prix revolutionised the show around the main race at Formula 1 events, in particular with the support categories on the schedule.
Australian-based categories received a great boost in racing at a Formula 1 event, with national television exposure on Nine Network.
There were three main support races that appeared in all 11 events in Adelaide: Australian touring cars (Group A and then the V8-based Group 3A rules), Australia’s premier open wheelers (Formula Mondial, Formula 2 and Formula Holden/Brabham) and the Celebrity Challenge (which ran to a pro-am format in 1985).
