VIDEO! Disassembling the McLaren MP4/4 Honda

The McLaren MP4/4 Honda achieved a near-perfect season in 1988, winning 15 of 16 races and recording 10 one-two finishes with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

McLaren and engine partner Honda were near-unbeatable over the course of 1988, only missing out on every win that season when Senna crashed with a backmarker while leading at the Italian Grand Prix.

The MP4/4 is one of the most iconic cars of the Adelaide Grand Prix era, with Prost defeating Senna in its final race and the last race of the turbo-charged Formula 1 era of the 1970s and 1980s in Adelaide in 1988.

In this extensive feature, designer Steve Nichols, engineer Matthew Jeffreys and mechanic Neil Trundle explain what made the car so formidable by disassembling just one of the six MP4/4s that were made.
